The sharp decrease in live pig prices and the increase in animal feed prices have caused farmers and farm owners to face new difficulties and challenges.
In the locality considered the "capital" of pig farming in the North, Mr. Nguyen Cong Chung Nhan, owner of a farm in Van Xa commune (Kim Bang - Ha Nam) said that his farm always maintains about 200 sows and 1,000 pigs; each month consumes about 80 tons of bran.
In 2021, the price of live pigs began to decrease from 90,000 VND/kg to about 63,000 - 65,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, animal feed suppliers have continuously increased prices, currently the price of bran has increased by 50,000 VND/bag, some types have increased by 70,000 VND/bag. The cost for 1 pig to the day of sale (about 100 kg/pig) for feed alone is 3 million VND, an increase of about 500,000 VND, plus the cost of breeding, electricity, water, and veterinary medicine has increased to more than 6 million VND. With the price of animal feed increasing continuously like this, farmers have no profit.
Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Nguyen Van Hong, owner of a farm in Kim Binh commune (Phu Ly city - Ha Nam) shared that his family's farm is currently raising 400 sows and nearly 2,000 fattening pigs. On average, his family's pig farm consumes 8,000 bags of bran (equivalent to 200 tons) each month. The price of each bag of bran has increased by 50,000 - 60,000 VND, while the cost of raising pigs has increased by 400 million VND each month, while the price of live pigs has dropped.
Therefore, households that cannot take the initiative in raising pigs and have to import them from outside almost break even, and if there is a risk of loss during the raising process, the loss is very high.
