Dong Thap farmers are ‘intoxicated’ with smart technology

The application of smart technology in agricultural production is spreading very strongly in Dong Thap province.

Dong Thap is the first locality in the country to be selected to pilot the development and implementation of the Agricultural Restructuring Project.

In the past three years, businesses, local authorities and farmers in Dong Thap have placed a lot of trust and expectation in automatic machinery, technology and equipment that bring practical efficiency such as: pest monitoring equipment, automatic irrigation equipment when applying IoT technology to equipment...

Agriculture 4.0 is applied by many farmers

In the days before Tet, we went to the tangerine and orange growing areas in Lai Vung district, everyone was busy taking care of their gardens to prepare agricultural products to sell right on Tet.

Mr. Nguyen Phu Thanh's garden in Vinh Thoi commune, Lai Vung district is one of the people who successfully invented a fairly modern mobile phone-controlled plant watering and pesticide spraying system.

Mr. Thanh said that in 2011, when he saw his child driving an electronic car, the idea of making an automatic watering system controlled by a remote flashed in his mind. To gain knowledge about electricity, circuits, chips, semiconductors, waves, etc., he sought out a few friends in the electronics field and researched the Internet, then carefully recorded all the useful knowledge.

Then, to get the equipment to serve the invention, Mr. Thanh went to scrap collection points, bought old and broken machines to research and test. Finally, Mr. Thanh succeeded with the automatic watering and pesticide mixing system controlled by a remote. However, when put into operation, there was a drawback that the remote control distance was only within 20 - 30 m and had to run all over the garden to scan for signals.

Thinking that mobile phones could cover everywhere, Mr. Thanh rushed to find a way to connect and install a SIM card into the controller. After only one week, he successfully created a pesticide spraying and watering system controlled by mobile phone.

According to Mr. Thanh, instead of before, to water 5 hectares of garden, he had to work from 7 am to 2 pm. Now, with just a motor, designed with 6 valves (each valve has 100 nozzles), the watering time of each valve is 10 minutes, watering only takes 60 minutes for the whole garden.

In the rice growing area of Thap Muoi district, farmers are satisfied with the operation of the Smart Pest Monitoring Station, located in the rice fields of farmers belonging to Thang Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative.

Smart agriculture creates safe production

Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Thien, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Thap said: In the process of restructuring agriculture associated with approaching the digital economy, many individuals and organizations have boldly changed and applied digital transformation to agricultural production as well as many high-value economic models.

In the field of cultivation and plant protection, initially using drones to spray pesticides, advanced rice production field models, saving water, applying 4.0 technology solutions and comprehensive mechanization at My Dong 2 Agricultural Service Cooperative (Thap Muoi district). Applying GIS technology to serve the work of predicting and forecasting pests to proactively prevent and control.

In the field of animal husbandry, successfully applied the online disease reporting software VAHIS in reporting diseases in livestock herds, applied Quantum GIS software in analyzing and evaluating the disease situation in livestock herds, and building epidemiological maps.

In the field of aquaculture, implementing a program to improve the quality of genetically improved pangasius breeds with embedded (chip) tracking, up to now, 21,610 parent fish have been transferred to 13 seed production facilities in the province.

In the field of irrigation and forestry, irrigation infrastructure has been digitized for management and monitoring, construction and installation of 16 early warning stations for thunderstorms in districts and cities. Application of remote sensing technology, information technology and geographic information systems (GIS) in investigation, inventory and monitoring of forest changes.

Application of information technology to connect the market, trace the origin including the models "My mango tree", "My garden orange tree", "My home field", creating a connection between producers and consumers to own their favorite products, helping to increase value.

My Xuong Mango Cooperative (Cao Lanh district) has implemented a blockchain application model in tracing the origin of mangoes. Application of e-commerce, e-commerce trading floors in promoting and expanding consumption markets...

In state management in the agricultural sector, the application of digital transformation in building an agricultural data system to store and serve state management and business exploitation needs, supporting the sharing of agricultural equipment through digital platforms.

According to Mr. Thien, the initial results of digital transformation in agriculture are valuable, but not much. Adapting to the digital economy to apply in restructuring the agricultural sector is still a challenge.

Therefore, to enhance digital transformation in agriculture in the coming time, the agricultural sector focuses on smart agriculture to create safe products, traceability, increase the proportion of high-tech agriculture, smart agriculture in the economy.

Applying digital technology to automate production, business, management, and origin monitoring processes, product supply chains, ensuring speed, transparency, accuracy, safety, and food hygiene.

At the same time, expanding research on the idea of "each farmer is a trader", establishing electronic diaries in the agricultural product chain to serve traceability, initially needing to be applied in new-style cooperatives in the province.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Director of Thang Loi Cooperative, said that this is a network that brings many benefits to farmers. Now, pests are no longer a big concern. Now, just open the pre-installed software on your phone to know the pest density at each time, what type, and then decide whether to spray pesticides or not, instead of just spraying pesticides right away when you see pests, wasting money and not being effective like before.
