Despite the pandemic, agricultural exports increased sharply towards the target of 45 billion USD

In the first 6 months of the year, agricultural, forestry and fishery exports still increased sharply, reaching 24.23 billion USD (up 28.2% over the same period in 2020). With this positive result, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said it would raise the agricultural export target this year to 45 billion USD, 3 billion USD higher than the target assigned by the Government at the beginning of the year.


According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), in the first 6 months of the year, despite being greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and facing many difficulties due to the disruption of global trade, the total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first 6 months of 2021 still increased sharply, exceeding the set plan, reaching a high result of 24.23 billion USD (up 28.2% over the same period in 2020). Of which, the main agricultural product exports reached 10.40 billion USD (up 13.3%); aquatic products reached 4.05 billion USD (up 12.5%); forestry products reached 8.7 billion USD (up 61.5%).

Contributing to this growth were items with high export turnover, including rubber (up 41.4% in volume, 80% in value); cashew nuts (up 22.2% in volume, 11.1% in value), cassava and cassava products (up 16.3% in volume, 30.5% in value). In particular, although the export volume of pepper decreased by 6.7%, thanks to the increase in export price, the export value still reached 499 million USD (up 40.5%). Other items increased in value mainly due to volume such as: wood and wood products reached 8.1 billion USD (up 74.8%), rattan, bamboo, sedge mats reached about 447 million USD (up 78.8%); shrimp reached 1.66 billion USD, up 8.5%.

Regarding export markets, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that China, the US, Japan and South Korea are the 4 largest import markets for agricultural, forestry and fishery products of Vietnam. Of which, exports to the US increased sharply to about 6.7 billion USD (up 59.8% over the same period in 2020 and accounted for 27.9% of total export value).

 

The Chinese market imported about 4.75 billion USD (up 32.1% and accounted for 19.6% of total export value).


Imports of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first 6 months of the year were about 21.09 billion USD. The industry's trade surplus reached 3.14 billion USD (down 21.3% compared to the same period in 2020).

To achieve this result, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that in recent times, the agricultural sector has implemented a series of solutions such as directing the promotion of opening agricultural markets with countries such as Peru, Australia, etc.; proactively researching, forecasting, and taking advantage of FTAs to promote agricultural exports; coordinating with the Vietnamese Embassy and Trade Offices in other countries to build channels for exchange and providing information on key export markets such as Japan, Korea, the United States, the EU and China, etc., to analyze, evaluate, and forecast the agricultural market, etc.

For the domestic market, the Ministry continuously monitors and synthesizes information and data on prices, production and supply of agricultural products in localities, especially in localities directly affected by the COVID-19 epidemic; Coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and localities to support people and businesses and develop response plans in production, circulation, distribution and consumption of agricultural products; avoid congestion of agricultural products at the border.

In particular, the Ministry supports connections to bring agricultural products with large output that are difficult to export to large supermarket systems, and promotes participation in reputable e-commerce platforms such as: Alibaba, Amazon, Sendo, Voso, Shopee...

With the positive results of the first 6 months of the year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said it will raise the agricultural export target this year to 45 billion USD, 3 billion USD higher than the target assigned by the Government at the beginning of the year.
