Congestion in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai pork is cheaper than ever

Retail prices at traditional markets to consumers are increasing again because wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City are closed, affecting supply.

The Dong Nai Animal Husbandry Association of Vietnam has just sent a document to the People's Committee of Dong Nai province and related ministries and agencies to propose opening a pork distribution and consumption point at 518, Quarter 3, Tan Hiep Ward, Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai.

Accordingly, the province's livestock farms are all facing difficulties in consumption. The main reason is that major wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City, such as Hoc Mon Market, Binh Dien Market, Thu Duc Market, and major distribution locations, have all temporarily suspended operations to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prices of livestock products such as pigs and poultry sold at farms have all decreased; in particular, live pigs are now at an unprecedented low price since the African cholera fever outbreak, at only VND55,000-VVND56,000/kg.

A series of Dong Nai traders doing business in these markets are subject to quarantine to prevent the pandemic, so they have almost temporarily stopped all pork trading and business activities. Therefore, local pig purchasing activities have almost stagnated.

Small private farms and households have suffered the most damage because they are not guaranteed output like contract farms. The widespread Covid-19 pandemic has made farmers worry that the live pig market will fall into an output crisis because it can’t be consumed.

Meanwhile, retail prices at traditional markets to consumers have increased because wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City have closed, affecting supply. The cost of intermediary stages of goods trading has increased due to difficulties in distribution and compliance with epidemic prevention and control requirements, causing the price of pork to consumers to increase accordingly. The already difficult lives of workers have become even more difficult.

According to The Dong Nai Animal Husbandry Association of Vietnam, the above situation creates an imbalance when prices fall at the production site but prices at the consumer site increase. Therefore, opening a distribution point right in Dong Nai will quickly resolve the pressure on price differences as well as prevent a consumption crisis for livestock farmers.

At this point of sale, the association commits to selling at the right price, strictly complying with COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control measures, ensuring security and order. Employees have negative COVID-19 test certificates, complying with 5K regulations. Pigs are sourced from livestock farms in the province.
